Quality canned pet food

Can anyone recommend a brand of canned cat food that is actually safe to feed a pet? I usually feed my cat a raw diet, but I want to put up a supply of food that will have a longer shelf life without a freezer. Something not made from roadkill in China. :D

Trader Joe's has canned tuna for cats. It isn't as good as people tuna but I'm sure it's way better than the average canned pet food.

That link didn't work. I think it should have been animalfood? :D

I'll check them out though.

I wonder what the shelf life of the freeze dried food is. I doubt its packed with O2 absorbers. At $32 for six pounds it looks like a really good deal assuming that is dry weight. Mountain House sells a #10 can that contains 1 pound of chicken for $42. Thats 8x as much per pound. Am I missing something or is MH a complete rip off? :shocked_ma:

Personally I store dry cat food. I have just bought some metal garbage cans to put in as I had a minor mouse intrusion into one bag.

If your cat/cats are not old and have good teeth they should be OK on 'hard tack'.

The dry stuff will eventually get rancid.

I've taken to feeding Disney's Old Yeller canned food to my Pry. It's cheap, she likes it and based on the label, it's not too bad.

Good point, Maddie. I have been rotating it and only buying bags with a good forward date on it.

These 'Wellness' canned pet food are supposed to be organic and free of any nasty fillers:

www.ohmpet.com

They also do a dry food range.

By the way I was feeding human canned tuna to my cats after that scare with the canned cat food last year. Someone told me not to do it, or only to do it very rarely, as the human tuna has a very high salt content. Too high for cats to take on any sort of regular basis. Probably too high for us to take too, for that matter.:thumpdown

They have 5 or 6 grain-free flavors. That's what my cats get when I slack on their raw diet.

We feed our cat EVO "The Ancestral Diet"

You might also consider buying the dry cat food as well it has a shelf life of about a year and you might be able to rotate it in. We have been feeding our cat the dry stuff for about a year and he has gained 3-4 pounds of muscle he used to be skinny and now he is a monster.

What if stored in plastic buckets with mylar and oxygen absorbers? Think I could store a years worth of dried food that way and have it be okay?

A friend owns an aquarium store and I can order pet food at cost. Planning on taking advantage of it in the next few weeks.

Worse, it's garbage to start with.

Not all brands, just most.

I feed my cats canned Natural Balance "Chicken and Liver Pate Formula." Just meat, carrot, and some supplements. No wheat gluten, which I absolutely avoid.

The "Venison and Pea Formula" also has no wheat gluten. My cats didn't like it though, so I stick to the first formula.

True. Just avoid the brands with grains in the top few ingredients. A good protein should be the first ingredient. Pet Promise seems to be a quality brand. Also, supplements are a good thing for pets. Enzymes and good fatty acids are lacking in most all pet foods.
